What is Hirundo?!

Hirundo Rustica – the Latin name of Barn Swallows. The barn swallow is a singing bird of open country. It builds a cup nest from mud pellets in barns or similar structures and feeds on insects caught in flight. This species lives in close association with humans. There are frequent cultural references to the barn swallow in literary and religious works due to its living close to humans and annual migration. It appears to have the most significant natural distribution of any of the world's passerines, ranging over 251 million square kilometers globally. It is a distinctive passerine bird with blue upperparts and a long, deeply forked tail. It is found in Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas.

But what is the connection between Hirundo and Therapy?

In the mythology, Hirundo represents hope and coming out of grief. Due to its migration, in many cultures, the appearance of Hirundo resembles the coming of spring and hope. In “The Happy Prince” by Oscar Wilde, the Hirundo, a little bird that supports and helps the prince even with the cost of her life, represents the idea of loyalty, hope, and helping others. Growing up in Israel, the appearance of Hirundo migrating in a flock added to April represented spring happiness, hope, beauty, and love. I want to believe that my work as a psychotherapist aligns with all these feelings and ideas expressed in the Hirundo.
